Established in 1876 in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Port Vale have always played their football in the lower echelons of the football league and have failed to play top-flight football in their history. However, they gained early success in Division Two, having been a founder member of the league, whilst in the 1950s they managed to get into an FA Cup semi-final.
During the 1980s and 1990s the man at the centre of all things good for Port Vale football club was John Rudge as he managed to keep them in the higher leagues and they finished 8th in the Second Division after a fantastic campaign.
