Spurs vs Man United Preview
Not since the most recent General Election has there been a clash between two less deserving winners, but somehow, we’ve ended up with the sides sitting 16th (Man Utd) and 17th (Tottenham) in the Premier League contesting a European final, with the winner inexplicably qualifying for the Champions League.
How the teams got there will matter little to either but what is for sure is that the Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday night represents a unique opportunity for one of them to rescue something from their worst season in recent memory.
Tottenham vs Man Utd Tips
Despite neither side having much to shout about this season, one area of the pitch which should be electric is the battle between opposing full backs Pedro Porro and Patrick Dorgu, who I'm backing at 5/2 to each commit 1+ foul and be fouled 1+ times.
When these sides met in the Premier League back in February, this bet landed comfortably as they had six foul involvements between them.
Porro isn’t usually a prolific offender, averaging just 0.77 per 90 and also only draws 1.07. However, for Dorgu those same metrics read 1.74 and 2.81.
With both Spurs and Man Utd heavily reliant on these men to provide attacking width and both players given the freedom to get forward at every opportunity, whomever comes out on top is likely to have a big say in where the trophy ends up and so both managers will be keen to keep the opposing player quiet.
Put simply, Dorgu is a foul magnet and with so many involvements for him and his opposite number in recent weeks, this price looks too good to turn down.
For my second betting tip, I'm backing Man Utd to lift the trophy, Andre Onana to be carded, and Tottenham to have 12+ shots, which is available at 14/1 with Sky Bet.
With the result of this final pivotal to the future of both managers and next season’s prospects for both clubs, it is perhaps one of the finals with the most jeopardy in the history of the competition.
With that jeopardy comes pressure and if there’s one thing that is consistent in Spurs’ history, it’s that they crack under pressure. Picking a winner here is far from easy but given the stark contrast in the history of the two clubs, United feel the most likely winners.
With so much at stake, if Ruben Amorim’s men can get ahead, they’ll be desperately trying to run the clock down and we’re likely to see Andre Onana taking his time at every restart.
The Cameroon international hasn’t had many winning positions to protect this season and as such is yet to receive a card but five bookings last season and 19 across his career suggest that he’s no stranger to the dark arts.
Referee Felix Zwayer carded both goalkeepers in his last Europa League match in charge and so hopefully won’t need much encouragement to book Onana if he is wasting time.
For all their faults, Tottenham have been relatively prolific in terms of shots this season and average 13.64 shots per game in this competition.
They comfortably covered this shot line in both league meetings this season despite winning both and if they do go behind, they’ll be throwing the kitchen sink at getting back into it and so 12 shots feels like the bare minimum we can expect.
