Cheltenham Day Four Preview
The fourth day of the Cheltenham Festival is the biggest in terms of attendance, prize money and of course the fact that the Cheltenham Gold Cup takes place.
While each day of the Cheltenham meeting is studded with quality races, it’s Day Four where we get to enjoy the cream of the National Hunt chasers battling it out over three miles.
Presenting Percy is the current favourite to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with the Irish raider hotly fancied to run a big race after an impressive performance in the RSA Chase last year. He ran and jumped beautifully and could be the one to beat.
Clan Des Obeaux has shortened in recent months and there is likely to be support for Native River who will want conditions to be as heavy as possible to enjoy the maximum opportunity.
Clan Des Obeaux is the main hope for trainer Paul Nicholls who enjoyed plenty of success in the Gold Cup with horses such as Kauto Star and Denman. The trainer is clearly confident there is more improvement to come from his charge.
Nicholls said: “I am thrilled with the way Clan [Des Obeaux] has progressed this season. He has had a great preparation and it is nice to go to Cheltenham with a leading chance.
“We are really looking forward to running him. I think there is a bit more improvement to come from him, like we’ve seen with Cyrname [now the top-rated chaser]. Of all the horses in the Gold Cup, he is probably the most improving youngster; a lot of those horses in there are exposed.”
Native River is a rather dogged competitor although you definitely want a horse that will stay three miles at this testing track, with Kemboy next in the betting and there are question marks over his stamina.
Might Bite is a quirky character who hasn’t really kicked on from that dramatic win in the RSA Chase two years ago, although perhaps we might see him coming back to the fore under Nicky Henderson.
Thistlecrack is another who has gone under the radar since emerging on to the scene, although 16/1 could seem like a big price about the Colin Tizzard runner if things fall his way.
The Triumph Hurdle could be all about one horse, with Sir Erec likely to go off odds-on. The JP McManus horse has won two races convincingly at Leopardstown and Joseph O’Brien looks to have a class act on his hands since taking over training duties.
Fakir Doudairies is next in the betting, although this horse is likely to take his chance in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, while Quel Destin is next in the betting market.
In the County Hurdle, we are likely to have double figure prices about all the runners and perhaps Ivanovich Gorbatov can return to Prestbury Park and run a blinder in the McManus colours.
The Albert Bartlett also looks to be a trappy encounter, with Lisnagar Oscar currently heading the market and this horse won the Albert Bartlett Prestige Novices Hurdle at Haydock to cement his claims at the Festival.
The Rebecca Curtis six-year-old could set the standard in this race, with the trainer having previously triumphed with At Fishers Cross.
On the Friday of the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, we also have the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle, with the horse Big Time Dancer entered for this race and this Lanzarote Hurdle winner could take his chances if the going is on the firmer side.
Dallas des Pictons is the current favourite in the betting, with Gordon Elliott bidding to have a final winner in what is sure to be an outstanding week for the Irish trainer, while he also has Mitchouka running in this renewal.
