After five games in the Champions League for Liverpool, it all boils down to what happens on Tuesday 11 December against Napoli.
Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have envisaged this scenario after watching his Reds side outplay Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in their opening match, although they have failed to collect anything from their three away games which leaves the Merseyside team sitting third in the group.
All is not lost and a certain kind of victory against Napoli would put Liverpool through to the last sixteen stage, with Klopp’s team having made the final last term against all the odds.
A 1-0 triumph would see the Reds go through on goal difference, although any other winning scoreline would have to be by a two goal margin considering that the reverse fixture ended 1-0 to Napoli and the first criteria is head-to-head record.
The Italian side will not be easily be beaten and they’ve been nearly foot-perfect during the group stage, going unbeaten in five games and landing draws away to PSG and Red Star Belgrade.
They were close to landing a victory at the Parc des Princes which would have put them in an unassailable position coming into this match, although Carlo Ancelotti will be calm and use his wealth of experience to good effect.
This Napoli side have only lost twice all season and continue to prove they are the second best team in Italy behind Juventus. They were good value for their 1-0 win over Liverpool in September when Lorenzo Insigne scored at the death and something similar could happen here.
Everton demonstrated recently at Anfield that this Liverpool team can be nullified and it will be the blueprint that the visitors look to follow.
